FAQ: MetaTrader 4

1. What are the live and demo MT4 account IP addresses?

A list of available servers should automatically load when you connect for the first time to the MetaTrader 4 server. If you manually entered the IP address, the next time that you log in to MT4, the list of servers should automatically load in the settings in alphabetical form (for example "Alpari FS-Standard", not 72.26.216.16:443). If your default server is not available, MT4 will automatically attempt to connect to a different one.

If you have a standard.mt4 account, select the "AlpariFS-Standard" server. If this server is not listed, try entering one of the following IP addresses manually:

  • 178.255.201.15:443
  • 178.255.201.15:444
  • 178.255.202.21:443

If you have an ecn.mt4 account, select the "AlpariFS-ECN" server. If this server is not listed, try entering one of the following IP addresses manually:

  • 178.255.201.12:443
  • 178.255.202.26:443
  • 178.255.202.26:444

If you have a demo.standard.mt4 account, select the "AlpariFS-Standard-Demo" server. If this server is not listed, try entering one of the following IP addresses manually:

  • 178.255.201.11:443
  • 178.255.202.22:443
  • 178.255.202.22:444

If you have a demo.ecn.mt4 account, select the "AlpariFS-ECN-Demo" server. If this server is not listed, try entering one of the following IP addresses manually:

  • 178.255.201.13:443
  • 178.255.201.13:444
  • 178.255.202.27:443

2. What time is shown in MetaTrader 4?

In MetaTrader 4, the time is shown as GMT+2 (GMT+3 during Daylight Saving Time).

3. Can the time zone be changed in MetaTrader 4?

Unfortunately, you cannot change the time zone in MT4.

4. Will MetaTrader 5 eventually replace MT4?

No. In the future, we will continue to offer MetaTrader 4 alongside MetaTrader 5 and you will be able to trade on either platform.

5. What is meant by "Volume" in the "Order" window?

In the "Volume" box, enter the size of the position you would like to open in lots.

  • 1 lot is equal to 100,000 units of the base currency
  • 0.1 lots: 10,000 units
  • 0.01 lots: 1,000 units

In a currency pair, the base currency is the first currency listed. For example, in EURUSD, EUR is the base currency. 1 lot of EURUSD is a position for 100,000 EUR.

6. What is the minimum lot size at Alpari FS?

The minimum lot size (the smallest position you can open) for standard.mt4 and ecn.mt4 accounts is 0.01 lots (1,000 units of the base currency).

For pro.direct accounts, it is 0.1 lots (10,000 units of the base currency).

8. Do you guarantee orders at the displayed price?

Under certain market conditions, it may be impossible to guarantee an order at the displayed price.

When an order level drops within a price gap at market open or during a period of high market volatility, the order (trade) will be executed at the current price in the quotes flow during the process of order execution. Stop Loss, Sell Stop and Buy Stop orders will be executed at a level that is less profitable. Take Profit, Sell Limit and Buy Limit orders will be executed at a level that is more profitable.

9. Where can I find my trading account history?

Open MT4 and go to the "Terminal" window at the bottom of the screen. If you cannot find the "Terminal" window, press Ctrl+T to make it appear. Select "Account History" and right-click in the box that opens up. Select “Save as Report” or “Save as Detailed Report” and choose where you would like to save your file. Click "Save". Your trading account history will be saved as an .html file, which you will be able to view in your internet browser.

10. How can I close a position if I can't log in to my trading account?

You can close a position by calling our dealing desk at +357 252 57 307. Our dealing desk is open 24 hours a day from Monday to Friday. For security reasons, you will need to provide your telephone password and MetaTrader 4 login details for your order to be executed.

11. How can I view the quote history for a certain currency pair?

Open MetaTrader 4 and select "History Center" from the "Tools" menu. Double-click "Fx Majors"/"Fx Minors" from the menu on the left, then double-click on the currency pair and time frame. Click "Download" to load your chosen quote history.

12. How can I add an Expert Advisor (EA) in MetaTrader?

To save an Expert Advisor to the MetaTrader 4 directory on your computer, select "My Computer" from the Windows "Start" menu and open the "Experts" directory: "C:" > "Program Files" > "Alpari MT4" > "Experts". Drag the Expert Advisor file into the "Experts" folder and restart MetaTrader 4. The "Expert Advisor" folder should then appear in the MetaTrader 4 "Navigator" window. Left-click on the Expert Advisor and drag it into the chart of the currency pair that you would like it to trade.

13. If an Expert Advisor isn't making trades, what should I do?

You first need to check if trading is allowed on the Expert Advisor by going to "Tools" > "Options" > "Expert Advisors" and making sure the "Allow live trading" feature is turned on. Then check the "Expert Advisors" button in the top tool bar to make sure that it’s green. If your Expert Advisor has been activated correctly, your chart will display a smiley face in the top right corner.

If you have followed the instructions above, but the EA is still not trading, check the log files in the "Experts" tab in the "Terminal" window (at the bottom of MT4) to see if any errors have occurred. If the problem persists, get in touch with us by sending an email to support@alparifs.com or contacting us through Live Chat.

14. Will I have any difficulty trading volatile markets or news releases?

No, this is not a problem. Our trading desk and platforms are well-equipped to accomodate active trading. For more information regarding order execution during volatile market conditions, please see our "Terms of Business".

15. Can I place a trailing stop on an order?

Yes, you can. Please refer to our MetaTrader 4 User Manual (.chm file) for more information about placing trailing stops.

Please note that trailing stops are only executed in the client trading terminal. If you log out or lose your connection to MetaTrader 4, any trailing stop orders you have placed will be deleted.

16. Can I buy and sell the same instrument at the same time?

Yes, you can. Opening a "Buy" and a "Sell" position on the same instrument is called '"hedging" or "matching" a position. The margin requirement for hedged positions is half of the margin requirement for normal, unhedged positions.

17. When I am offline will you close my placed orders and open positions?

Once you have placed an order, it will be logged in our system and remain active, even after you log out of the MT4 platform. This is true for all types of orders with the exception of trailing stops. Trailing stop orders will be deleted as soon as you log out of MetaTrader 4 or lose your connection. Similarly, Expert Advisors will be deactivated when you log out of MT4 or lose your connection.

18. What will happen if I leave my position open overnight?

All positions left open overnight are rolled over; therefore, the value date will move forward to the next business day. This allows all trades to maintain their open spot status.

As a result, open positions will incur a swap credit or charge, based on the swap rates available on the Contract Specifications page.

The cost of swap/rollover is primarily based on the difference of the interest rate of the currencies within the pair. While swap rates can be dependent on the market demand and supply itself, generally when you buy a currency pair with a higher interest rate and then sell the currency pair with a lower interest rate, you’ll earn the swap/rollover. Alternatively, if you buy the currency pair with a lower interest rate and then sell the currency pair with a higher interest rate, you will then be charged swap/rollover. Please note that swap rates are subject to change.

Note: Swap will be applied at triple the rate indicated on our Contract Specifications page for any positions kept open from Wednesday to Thursday.

19. Does Alpari FS charge commission?

On standard.mt4 accounts, the only transaction cost is the spread (the difference between the Bid and Ask price).

On ecn.mt4 and pro.direct accounts, you will be charged commission on your transactions. Please contact us for more information.
